Start the school year using GCA’s Mastery Assessments for student pretest

Mastery Assessments can identify opportunities where incoming students may require specific instruction to improve or enhance their understanding and mastery of key standards. With GCA’s Mastery Assessments, 4th grade ELA and 6th grade math teachers can identify those areas in need of improvement earlier in the school year and provide additional support from the start.

Background

In the spring of 2017 the Georgia Legislature passed a comprehensive assessment bill, Senate Bill 211 (SB 211), which was designed to address assessment standards from kindergarten through high school. SB211 provided significant opportunities for how local school districts assess student performance.

Specifically, this bill tasked districts with assessing mastery in third-grade reading and fifth-grade mathematics, to ensure students have mastered the skills necessary to be successful at the next grade level. Districts are given latitude in identifying their own solutions.

For 4th Grade ELA Educators

Our Grade 3 English Language Arts/Reading Comprehension Mastery Assessment can be used as a pretest in 4th grade classrooms.

To create our assessment, we brought together a representative panel of Georgia elementary teachers to identify specific Georgia Standards of Excellence (GSE) in grades 1, 2, and 3 that are the most critical for a student to master in order to be successful in Grade 4. The Grade 3 English Language Arts/Reading Comprehension Mastery Assessment is built on those key Georgia Standards of Excellence.

For 6th Grade Math Teachers

Likewise, 6th grade mathematics teachers can take advantage of our Grade 5 Mathematics Mastery Assessment for use at the beginning of the school year.

Our partnership with Georgia elementary teachers identified specific Georgia Standards of Excellence (GSE) in grades 3, 4, and 5 that are the most critical for a student to master in order to be successful in Grade 6. The Grade 5 Mathematics Mastery Assessment is built on those key Georgia Standards of Excellence.

Starting the Year Off Right

The “summer slide” can have real implications for knowing where students stand in a particular content area. Our Mastery Assessments in ELA and Math are designed to be an effective pretest to benchmark your students at the beginning of the school year.
